Reading a song clock

  1. The rim is the song. It starts at twelve o'clock, at the vermilion hand, and goes round once, clockwise. Its bands are the sections; the darker, the nearer to the chorus.
  2. The petals are the chords. Each root has its place on the circle of fifths, so neighbours are related chords. The longer the song stays on a chord, the further its petal reaches.
  3. The shades are their roles. Home (the tonic), away from home, the pull back home, and hatched: chords from outside the key.
  4. The vermilion arc marks the key, and the hub says it, with the tempo and the metre.
